Wandering Through Omodos: Cyprus’ Hidden Mountain Gem

a cobbled street in omodos village, with multi-coloured painted doors and pots with greenery.

Omodos Village is quite a large village compared to some of those dotted around Troodos. It’s always bustling with tourists, and locals trying to escape the heat of the city.

The heart of the village is the main square, where the Monastery of the Holy and Life-giving Cross sits majestically overlooking the lively cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Omodos Monastery is one of the oldest and most historic monasteries on the island. Parts of it dating back 1500 years. It also houses a cross, which is said to perform miracles, and was found in a cave on the site on which the Monastery is built.

If you want to visit the monastery you need to dress appropriately. If you appear to be “under dressed”, you will be given a thick wool Jedi robe to wear. Which is a little uncomfortable in the hot summer months (although great for photos)!

Little winding streets head away from the main square. Each one has an array of craft shops, tiny museums, cafes and traditional restaurants. Take some time and explore them all. You will learn about the local wine making, sampling all the different reginal varieties, visit the olive presses, see local artists blow glass, and also visit with the local ladies’ hand making the local lace and jewelry.

Omodos should definitely be on your bucket list of Cyprus!
