Milomeris Magic: A Glimpse into Cyprus’ Majestic Waterfall

houses on the side of the troodos mountains surrounded by trees, on the milomeris nature trail.

Milomeris Waterfall, is by far the most popular and instagramable waterfall on the island! The Krios Potamos river falls fifteen metres into a deep ice-cold pool, which then continues to flow down the Troodos mountains.

Milomeris roughly translated means wet place. The waterfall cascades all year round. The water level is higher in winter, resulting in the falls flowing faster and crashing more dramatically against the blackened rocks.

Milomeris Waterfall

The waterfall is always extremely busy, unless you go first thing in the morning. Only then can you beat the daily crowds.

If you go during the summer months, you will find buses full of excited tourists lined up in the car park, all waiting to get their photograph at the foot of the falls.

This waterfall is also a big hit with the locals, and no matter what the season, you will find families and groups of friends having picnics on the rocks, and bathing in the rippling lake. It is also a mecca for yogis and groups who like to meditate; the sound of the water helping to slow their mind and find inner peace.

The easiest way to get to Milomeris Waterfall, is to drive right into the carpark, then follow the 100 metre path and stairs down to the lake area.

Milomeris Nature Trail

If you like more of an adventure, how about doing the Milomeris Nature Trail? The trail is 1.2 kilometres long and is super fun! The trail starts on the main road at the entrance to Platres, just before the Panagias Faneromenis Church. There is an information board in place, to show you which direction to go. The route you will take through the beautiful greenery of Troodos, following the river, and ending at the majestic falls.

This nature trail is a great one to do with kids. Although there are a few sharp inclines, and a couple of areas with steep drops, so you will have to keep an eye on them along the way. It’s also a great trail to do with dogs. They love running through the river, bounding up the hills and through the vegetation. You’ll see a lot of dogs and families along the way, it’s a great day out, especially in the cooler months.

The walk starts on a narrow path behind someone’s house. It takes you down a small hill, and then opens out to the river, and a beautiful little bridge for you to cross over.

You follow the river on the left-hand side. Wandering through rich green foliage, ancient trees, and wildflowers. As you get closer to the waterfall, you can start to here to drum of the falling water beating against the rocks. It almost sounds like music. It becomes the soundtrack to your walk, as you follow the trail up to where the mountain opens, and you are greeted with the most spectacular view.

Make sure you have your camera for this part. On a clear day you can see for miles! This is also a good place to stop for water and a rest before tackling the downhill part of the walk.

The downwards part sounds easy enough, but the area is slippery, and parts can be quite steep. Hold on to the handrails where you can, and wear trainers or hiking boots to avoid toppling over.

The path ends at the entrance to the waterfall carpark, where an ice cream man is usually doing a roaring trade on lollies and cones. We always feel that an ice cream at this point is a must. A reward for all our hard work, and the exercise we have done on the way!

The Milomeris Nature Trail takes about 40 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. If you are going to do the trail, make sure you take suntan lotion, a bottle of water, swimwear, a towel and of course a couple of Euros for the ice cream man!
